Tanya delivers a message to youth

Foster Kids, Personal Mentors Honored at Event

Scholarship funds, awards presented at event coinciding with National Foster Care Month.
For Tanya Cooper, growing up in the foster care system meant changing residencies and abuse. While she could have ended up as a statistic pointing to hardships, she overcame her difficulties thanks to support from people who cared.
At a Wednesday event at the Mount Kisco Public Library, Cooper raised awareness of being a foster kid, gave recognition to those who helped her growing up and arranged for a new scholarship fund to help teens who are "aging out" of the foster system and heading to college.
For Cooper, who spoke emotionally about his background, her childhood and teen years did not come easy, as she grew up without a permanent household.
At just 5, she and her three siblings were taken away from their mother in Brooklyn, who was sick and had a heroin addiction; she passed away when Cooper was 17. They were left alone for periods of time and with no food. However, being pulled apart as a family created its own problems for Cooper, as she passed through group homes and foster care, hardship that included sexual abuse. Since then she was tried to reconcile with her sister, whom he declined to name, and is trying to locate her other brother, Mark. Growing up, she was still with her other brother, Robert, whose life was cut short in 2009 when he died of heart disease at 41.
Even being pulled away by her mother, in a process intended to help children, felt alienating to a child who did not know the circumstances.
"They treat you like you're a rare animal meant for the zoo," Cooper said in reading from her book, which lookde at the matter from a child's perspective.
Yet, despite getting a torrent of hardships and obstacles in her way, Cooper persevered, graduating from Fox Lane High School - she lived then, and lives now in Bedford Hills - and then New York University. She also did a stint as a model in Paris, and got involved in substance abuse counseling for teens. She now has a family of her own with two daughters, Arielle and Tatiana.
Recently, Cooper has taken on a new, informal career as a motivational speaker, and is even self publishing a book about her experiences, titled Surviving Foster Care & Making it Work for You, which she reads parts of at the event.
This interest, combined with Robert's death, spurred her to action to speak out about foster care issues.
In organizing Wednesday's event, in recognition of National Foster Kids Month, Cooper got together with Megan Castellano of the Mental Health Association in Putnam. Castellano, who is originally from Mount Kisco and was a high school friend of Robert Cooper, got together with Tanya Cooper after discovering a 2010 profile of her in The Journal News. She spoke emotionally about the loss of Robert Cooper and passionately spoke about about the issues of foster kids, noting that mental health is tied in as an issue. She also noted that Robert Cooper got her interested in her career based on how he felt positively of a social worker who helped him.
It was Robert Cooper's memory that helped spur the creation of the event. A $250 scholarship was presented in his honor. The first winner this year was Ramusa Alejandro, who is a Fox Lane student and lived in a Bedford group home. For college, he will be heading to St. John's University.
“While I was too young then to understand what was happening, I was not going to end up just another statistic," Alejandro wrote in an essay that was read aloud. In accepting the scholarship, he said that “a smile does go a long way," and noted how seeing smiles would cheer him up.
Three honorable receipients of extra amount of $100 were also honored: Amanda Ocasio, Reggie Silva and Crystal Abad.
In her acceptance, Ocasio, who is a student at the Dr. Kenneth B. Clark Academy in Dobbs Ferry and will go to the Fashion Institute of Technology next fall, thanked St. Christopher's, which works with Clark, for its support. Silva, who also attends Clark, will attend LaGuardia Community College and study accounting.
In recognition of adults who helped Cooper, two Citizen of Change Awards were presented. They went to Mary Ellen McKee, who was a physical education teacher at Fox Lane when Cooper was a student there, and Gamilah Lamumba Shabazz, a counselor who supported her when she was in a group home as a teen.
“She did everything, but she just had so much bottled up inside and didn’t know how to release it," said Shabazz. "Once she was able to vent everything she just flowered.”
McKee also received recognition from Mayor J. Michael Cindrich, who issued a local proclaimation for May 20 to be a day in her honor. Locally, her ties to Mount Kisco include being a congregant of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and having served on the boards of Mount Kisco Child Care Center and the Boys & Girls Club. This proclaimation was made along with a general one for foster care, with is May 19.
Cindrich recounted his own family history with helping parentless children, noting that he had a great-grandfather who lived in Brooklyn a century ago who adopted two children, in addition to his six biological children. They went on to become New York City police officers, he said, while the biological children turned to careers that included clergy and teaching.
Ultimately, the occasion was one to bring people together and to spread awareness of foster kids, as well as to encourage those aging out of the system to keep grow into productive adults.
Editor's Note: Some references to Tanya Cooper's brother, Robert, had him identified as "Richard Cooper," in addition to the correct references. The story has been updated and fixed.

summer is near

Hi blog family!

Life is SO sweet when you have a plan!!!!
ok. i know you have been going to school, its a piece of cake...ok so i could only photo cupcakes!
I am sure you have new friends, sports to do after school.and summer is coming but keep focused on your goal - to get your education,
become self sufficient and
 be a lover of life!!!
You are doing a great job so far, if not....
get back on track!!

If you are having any problems with classes and the teacher is being difficult....get an adult to help you have a conference and figure out if its you or the teacher...
you may need a tutor...your school should provide one for free! if its the teacher.....
either deal with it and try to get a 70 atleast...or switch out of the class...yes it can be done just talk to your counselor or worker...
and then the principle if that does not work...u need to have decent grades to get to atleast community college!!
Of course your going, it is free for you and you are going to Utilize all your resources like I tell you to in my book: Surviving foster care and making it work for you!!! (lulu.com now) ..and creatspace.com next)...i will give you the link by next week..

by: Wallace D. Wattles- principles for getting rich....
" You cannot exercise much power without gratitude; for it is gratitude that keeps you connected with Power.
But the value of gratitude does not consist solely in getting you more blessings in the future. Without gratitude you cannot long keep from dissatisfied thought regarding things as they are.
The moment you permit your mind to dwell with dissatisfaction upon things as they are, you begin to lose ground. You fix attention upon the common, the ordinary, the poor, and the squalid and mean; and your mind takes the form of these things. Then you will transmit these forms or mental images to the Formless, and the common, the poor, the squalid, and mean will come to you.
To permit your mind to dwell upon the inferior is to become inferior and to surround yourself with inferior things.
On the other hand, to fix your attention on the best is to surround yourself with the best, and to become the best.
The Creative Power within us makes us into the image of that to which we give our attention. We are Thinking Substance, and thinking substance always takes the form of that which it thinks about.
The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best; therefore it tends to become the best; it takes the form or character of the best, and will receive the best.
Also, faith is born of gratitude. The grateful mind continually expects good things, and expectation becomes faith. The reaction of gratitude upon one's own mind produces faith; and every outgoing wave of grateful thanksgiving increases faith. He who has no feeling of gratitude cannot long retain a living faith; and without a living faith you cannot get rich by the creative method, as we shall see in the following chapters.
It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you; and to give thanks continuously.
And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.
Do not waste time thinking or talking about the shortcomings or wrong actions of plutocrats or trust magnates. Their organization of the world has made your opportunity; all you get really comes to you because of them.
Do not rage against corrupt politicians; if it were not for politicians we should fall into anarchy, and your opportunity would be greatly lessened.
God has worked a long time and very patiently to bring us up to where we are in industry and government, and He is going right on with His work. There is not the least doubt that He will do away with plutocrats, trust magnates, captains of industry, and politicians as soon as they can be spared; but in the meantime, behold they are all very good. Remember that they are all helping to arrange the lines of transmission along which your riches will come to you, and be grateful to them all. This will bring you into harmonious relations with the good in everything, and the good in everything will move toward you.

holiday gone good, what is YOUR grade?

hi blog family!
Hope you are enjoying your vacation if your in school...and still keeping your mind fresh reading a new book every month (atleast)...
and if your not in school but left foster care, I hope you are building a new "Holiday" ritual for yourself and your future family...that means whatever you hated about the holidays...(no family, no home visits, no one to visit etc...)..
YOU are now in charge to do whatever you want.
.today my kids and I went to the Brooklyn museum then a friend took us to eat Mexican dinner..
then we walked around Brooklyn..this is OUR holiday..
it could be in church sunday and then dinner,
it could be sitting at your house with you cooking or potluck, everyone brings something to eat...
most important...you enjoy that time as "family or "friends that are like family...
whatever as long as YOU enjoy it and stop saying "I hate holidays"....most people hate them because it did not go the way they wanted in childhood---fix it, this is your life, you can fix issues like bad holidays and make it better ..if you have no family...find GOOD friends who really care about you, and celebrate with them!!! Angels are waiting everywhere to help you find your destiny!!xo Tanya

I will leave you with something my friend Tar wrote (gotta give credit)..but first.... know that you are loved and special...and the world NEEDS you to stay on your A game...without YOU this world will be different!! smile, someone is watching you!

If YOU evaluated your last week... how would YOU rate it. How did YOU advance yourself? What did YOU learn? Did YOU help anyone else other than yourself? What are YOU doing to develop into the Person YOU always wanted to be? Settling should never be an option! I give myself a C+... I can do better. If YOU can't be honest with yourself... what kind of future do you expect?- taken from my friend Tar

Investigators continue to focus on abusive ex-cop in Bronx mom slaying - NYPOST.com
Ladies and Gentelmen: This is pertaining to abusive partners!
If you grew up in a group home, were moved around or had family abusive issues, your likely to attract to this type of partner. I am giving you a few things to look for after you read this article: REMEMBER, THE SIGNS OF AN ABUSIVE PARTNER ARE ALWAYS THERE BEFORE YOU DATE OR MARRY HIM/HER, YOU JUST DID NOT WANT TO LISTEN OR YOU WANTED TO ATTRACT YOUR OLD "FAMILY" DRAMA OF ABUSE..MEANING IF YOU GREW UP IN A HOUSE OF VIOLENT CHAOS, UNLESS YOU GET THE PROPER THERAPY- YOU WILL ATTRACT THE SAME TYPE OF MATES!!! INSANITY= DOING THE SAME THING OVER, EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS, IF THEY YELL AT YOU, CHECK YOUR CELL PHONE, SAY THINGS LIKE, " I KNOW YOU GOTTA GO SEE YOUR OTHER FRIEND", ALL SIGNS OF A POTENTIAL ABUSIVE MATE/STALKER. THESE MEN ARE KILLING THEIR PARTNERS BECAUSE THEIR VALUES SAYS: IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU, NO ONE CAN, EVEN THE KIDS!! STAY AWAY FROM ANYONE THAT YELLS, ARGUES EXCESSIVLY, HITS YOU, THREATENS YOU, CHECKS YOUR PHONE, WERE YOU AT, DON'T WANT YOU TO GO TO YOUR MOM'S OR SISTERS HOUSE, DON'T WANT YOU WITH YOUR FRIENDS OR WAITS TILL YOU GET HOME AND CALLS YOU EVERY FEW MINUTES....STALKER....RUN!!!

PLEASE KNOW THAT FOSTER KIDS WHO TURN INTO ADULTS USUALLY WILL SETTLE, AND IF THAT GUY HAS ALOT OF $, CUTE, HAS A HOUSE....(YOU KNOW ALL THE FRILLS, YOU THINK YOU ARE STABLE OR SAFE.....NOT....DONT EVER RELY ON ANYONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOU BUT YOU!! READ AND LEARN FROM THIS COUPLE.... 1ST SIGN,,HE HAD A HISTORY OF ABUSE WITH EX WIFE....DAH....WHY WOULD HE CHANGE, WITHOUT PROPER THERAPY????? EXACTLY XO TANYA

how do you pick your friends?

Hi blog family!

hope school is going well and you are loving your classes, friends and school life!

This time of year can be a challenge because if your grades are not up you may be feeling down... Don't worry- you can start today, getting the help and support you need-BY ASKING!!

Sometimes adults don't see a red flag and you may have to speak up!!
If your teacher is difficult, your dealing with a bully in class, you don't understand the work- Speak up! You have to fight for yourself and always stand up for you! That is why you were born with a mouth and a brain!

On another note I want you to hold Japan in the light and be grateful you are not only living, but able to create change in an instant because you are powerful, talented, and much needed by this world! Maybe you can figure out why people use "Nuclear" anything - when they know it will kill us all?
Your job is to go to school and reach your destiny, maybe it will be you, who saves the world!!

You are loved, special and don't forget to smile, someone may be watching you!!
Have a great day and stay in control of your destiny by planning and doing only that which is positive and will help you get ahead in life!! xxo T

praying for japan

hi blog family!
I hope school is going well!

pray for Japan and all the other Countries/places that had catastrophic events. You must always meditate harder for others than yourself- it takes your mind off of your problems when you help others!!! Remember when it comes to catastrophy's, drugs and life--their is no discrimination so we must ALL come togeather for the sake of this earth.
Hold Japan in the light (pray) (meditate)- whatever your preference but think of those in need today, and worry about you another time.
Please pray for any kids left in the orphanages there, pray that those who make it are resilant, and hold on until rescue comes.

Man thinks he is smarter than God or the Universe- it can never be and we will see many more things happen that NO ONE has control over! The lesson will be for ALL of us to come togeather, or destroy one another!
Remember the earth will always be here, we are the ones that will vanish or change form if man does not stop thinking he is creator...We all have divine purpose, what is yours, what legacy do you want to leave if you died today?? think, meditate and take action-today!

if you have food, shelter & health - you should be praising the universe/God for letting you rise one more day without incident.
You can show you are grateful by helping others- that can be with a smile, deed, check or prayer! xo

energy equals energy

hey blog family!
I know its been a minute-i am trying to get this book out for you!! soon!
In the meantime- i hope you are doing good in school and if you was not, you are trying to get better grades, meet better friends and be a better person.

Remember what i said about energy? how you feel? it determines if your going to have a good day or not by how you "feel"..i want you to keep feeling" like you won $1million dollars!! You can attract more to you if you are smiling and feeling good-no one wants to give to a unhappy face or a nasty person...your lesson for the day...."feel" like you won $1million dollars!! even when you wake up-stop complaining its too early- its never to early to enjoy life!! Be glad you got up...somebody did not wake up this morning!!

I lost my baby brother but him and I always woke with cheer because we knew, tommorrow is NOT promised-so what you do while you are here: who you help, who you are kind to, how good you are to yourself and your body-all matters!!! You are KING and QUEEN and we need you to change this universe! Go out smiling and shinning superstar!!! xo Tanya

politics-what can you do

Hi blog family!
I hope your report cards showed great grades or great progress. I hope you are getting the tutor you need or staying at lunch at the resource center. I hope that you are able to talk with your counselor about any issues you are having in school.
It is your world-you have the right to get the help you need!!
Remember you can always google ANYTHING you don't know the answer to-i am sure it will lead you to an answer or mighty close!!

I read that Egypt has a victory- all the young people that got togeather and caused such a rukus that president Mubarak resigned- after 29 years-3 decades of ruling!!!
This man would not let the people have their say, he put many people in jail during his reign.

I am glad he is kicked out because he imprisioned a family friend for speaking his mind and now thanks to the youth movement, he is going back home to Eygpt-after years of living in exhile!!! HOORAY for youth that standup and take action!!!!
can you imagine the power of the people-when they get togeather for a cause-to vote for whom they want and not a rigged election?? You should take notes and remember that YOU do make a difference and TOGEATHER- we can all make a change!! You should know this is why you should vote when you are 18..start researching now..google or talk to a political science teacher to start a club on awareness-(just be careful that the teacher is not ignorant -you will know if sound one sided..not giving all the facts from both sides....

I don't want you to get crazy over politics but i do want you to know what is happening, here and in other countrys-why? Because and informed person is able to make wiser decisions!!!

Don't sleep on ANYONE-including a politician- always do your homework- google what you need to know and IF you can find someone close to that topic- interview them on a friendly note to get an opinion from someone who was there or is doing "that"... (maybe you have a friend at school who has family in that country? talk to them lightly, who what when where and why?? always ask about your friends culture if it is different than yours-this is how you learn!!)

We need you to be thinking of our future and how to make it better.
I suggest you go to college to be a juge, lawyer, president, doctor, some field where YOU will call all the shots!!
If you happen to end up in a job like most of us---still use your voice to make change but whatever you do- don't become a complainer like most of us "this aint fare- that's not right etc.."these are usually people who never vote and say "it aint gonna matter if I vote"- how crazy is that!

My foster mother, along with Doctor King, Malcom X, and many others, gave their lives SO that YOU could VOTE and say what you wanted...without being lynched-and now we repay our ancestors by NOT voting--that makes no sense!!

Get involved and wake up, you are being put to sleep with many other problems, (that don't have to be) gangs, violence on each other, "weed" aka cronic", babies, lazyness-----

WAKEUP YOUNGINS!!!!! ITS YOUR TIME TO SHINE!!!
The founder of the 80's group CHIC-NILE ROGERS CREATED A SAYING: STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING!! It applys to anything!!!
get up get out and do something IF its that bad, if not, live your life and deal with what you get when you don't speak up- leftovers...

Your voice is powerful and the media plays a part (all those dumb shows that make YOU think its ok to be drunk 24/7, all the shows that make YOU think its ok to have a baby at 15....
all those shows that make YOU think a big but and no clothes is ok to get what you want- WAKE UP!! start using the brain you were given, read more, talk less and please stop watching TV-until you understand you and your purpose!
You are loved and needed by this universe-get going, we are counting on you!!!

Relationships & Foster care

Hi blog family- I'm back!
Relationships & foster care.

It is hard to have any-when you have no good example to choose from.
So if you are not sure how to pick a good mate or friend-stop picking the bad ones- the one who has all the drama, gossip, negative words, gangbangers, dealers, cutting class-u know!
If nothing else, you know that ANY relationship should consist of two people that respect, admire and love each other for whom they are-never trying to change them or mold them, accepting them with flaws (as long as it is not drama or you doing all the work).. both parties should get something out of each other that makes them do better, love harder and want to be greater! Your true friend will support you and tell you what is right-not guide you wrong!
Don't settle for crazy, lazy, drama friends and mates- You are KINGS and QUEENS & should surround yourself only with people who think and do at their highest level.
life is short-only surround yourself with people that love you and have your best interest at heart IF there is any hint of jealousy, envy, hatred, mean spiritness- ABANDON SHIP!! God put plenty of people on the earth for you- its up to you to find them!
You are loved, and the universe needs you to get yourself together so that you may help the other 500,000 kids in foster care!! teach one-reach one
